Sam Altman invited a famous author to speak to his staff, and apparently forgot that the man had spent decades writing pointed critiques of exactly the kind of company OpenAI is.

Dave Eggers — novelist, journalist, founder of McSweeney's, and champion of writing education — accepted the invitation and then used it to deliver something closer to a verdict than a speech. Standing in front of roughly 200 OpenAI employees, Eggers told them plainly that ChatGPT has made every teacher's job catastrophically harder, and that students who use it to write will never actually learn to write. They won't find their voice. They won't be able to tell their own story. His conclusion: the technology is silencing an entire generation, whether that was the intention or not.

It's a striking thing to say to a room full of people who built the thing. But Eggers wasn't there to soften the blow. His framing was deliberate — he acknowledged that OpenAI may not have set out to cause harm, but insisted that good intentions don't cancel out real consequences. Teachers are drowning in suspicion about whether student work is authentic. Students are outsourcing the one cognitive exercise that actually teaches them to think in language. The damage is happening regardless of anyone's mission statement.

Altman, to his credit, extended the invitation knowing full well who Eggers is. The man's novel The Circle is one of the most widely read takedowns of Silicon Valley's utopian self-image, and he's publicly dismissed AI-generated writing as little more than recycled noise. This wasn't a surprise ambush. It was either a genuine attempt to hear hard feedback, or a very confident bet that it wouldn't change anything.

The deeper issue Eggers is pointing at isn't really about cheating. It's about what writing actually does for a person. Writing is how people figure out what they think. It's how they develop a sense of self, learn to construct an argument, and communicate with precision. If the friction of that process gets automated away before students ever struggle through it, they don't just miss the assignment — they miss the development. A spell-checker corrects a typo. A tool that writes your essay for you skips the entire point.

Eggers runs schools and nonprofits specifically to give young people access to writing instruction. He's watched, up close, what it looks like when kids finally find their voice on the page. His alarm isn't abstract or nostalgic. It's the concern of someone who has spent years building the exact thing he believes ChatGPT is quietly dismantling.

Whether OpenAI staff left that room with any new doubts is unknown. But the fact that the speech is still being talked about suggests it landed harder than a standard industry critique usually does.

Google-backed FireSat satellites launch to detect wildfires faster

The timing couldn't have been more pointed. On July 7, as smoke from hundreds of wildfires spread across Canada and the United States, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base carrying the first three operational satellites of the FireSat constellation — a system built specifically to catch wildfires before they become disasters.

FireSat is managed by a nonprofit called the Earth Fire Alliance and has pulled in serious money, including more than $15 million from Google and $26 million from the Bezos Earth Fund. The satellites themselves were designed by Muon Space, a California-based manufacturer, and they carry multispectral imaging capable of detecting fires as small as five by five meters — roughly the size of a parking space — even through smoke and cloud cover. That's a meaningful leap beyond what existing satellites can see.

After a three-month testing period, the three newly launched satellites will start delivering data to fire agencies in California, Colorado, Australia, and Portugal. Each fire-prone region on Earth will get covered at least twice per day during this early phase. The long-term roadmap is more ambitious: hourly coverage globally by 2029, and updates every 20 minutes once the full constellation of more than 50 satellites is in orbit sometime in the early 2030s.

The practical stakes are significant. The Earth Fire Alliance estimates that even an hourly revisit rate could prevent more than $1 billion in fire damage annually, protect around 3,500 homes, and keep nearly 22 million tons of carbon emissions out of the atmosphere. Those numbers are projections, but the underlying logic is solid — catching a fire when it's small enough to suppress is categorically different from watching it become a regional catastrophe.

Google plans to layer its AI models on top of the satellite imagery, comparing real-time FireSat data against historical images to identify small fires with greater accuracy and feed predictive models about how fires might spread. The company called the launch a step toward putting AI to work for climate resilience, which is a reasonable description of what's happening.

But there's an uncomfortable footnote worth acknowledging. The same AI buildout that Google is now deploying for climate solutions has contributed to the problem in the first place. AI data centers consume enormous amounts of electricity and water, and the energy demand tied to the industry's rapid expansion has put real pressure on power grids and accelerated emissions in some regions — the same emissions linked to the hotter, drier conditions that make wildfires worse and more frequent.

None of that makes FireSat a bad idea. Faster wildfire detection is genuinely useful and the technology looks promising. But framing AI as a clean solution to a problem the AI industry helped create deserves at least a raised eyebrow alongside the applause.
