FCC moves to let ISPs hide fees behind vague pricing
Here is the most maddening part of your internet bill: your ISP already knows exactly what it charges you, but under a new FCC proposal, it would no longer have to tell you what each fee actually is before you sign up.
The FCC is set to vote on July 22 to roll back a Biden-era rule that required internet service providers to itemize every fee they pass along to customers on a standardized broadband label. Instead, ISPs would be allowed to lump those fees into a single "up to" figure — a number that can include charges from both government entities and private companies like utility pole owners. In other words, your bill could go up by some unknown amount, and your ISP gets to call it a day with one vague line item.
This matters more than it might seem. ISPs have spent years advertising artificially low monthly prices while stacking fees on the back end of bills. The broadband label requirement, which has existed in some form for about a decade, was specifically designed to close that gap by making the full cost of service visible before consumers committed to a plan. The Biden administration tightened that rule to force providers to break out each discretionary fee individually. Comcast and other major ISPs pushed back hard, arguing the requirement was too complicated.
Under FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, the commission has been systematically unwinding consumer-facing rules put in place by the previous administration. This latest move fits that pattern cleanly. The draft order does not just soften the fee-disclosure requirement — it also gives ISPs more flexibility in how they display the labels themselves. Rather than featuring price labels prominently on ordering pages and account portals, providers would be allowed to simply link to that information instead. They would also no longer be required to publish pricing data in machine-readable spreadsheet formats, which researchers and comparison tools have relied on.
There is also a change to phone sales disclosures that deserves a closer look. Currently, sales representatives are required to read label information verbatim to customers calling in. The new rule would let reps paraphrase it "conversationally." That is a polite way of saying the information can be summarized in whatever way the person trying to close a sale sees fit.
The FCC has framed these changes as a simplification effort, reducing complexity for providers and making disclosures easier to deliver. But simplification that primarily benefits the party doing the selling, at the expense of the party doing the buying, is not really simplification — it is just less accountability with better branding.
The rule change was first proposed in October 2025 through a formal notice-and-comment process. The draft order that emerged from that process will take effect 30 days after it is published in the Federal Register, assuming it clears the July 22 vote. If it does, consumers shopping for internet service will have meaningfully less information to work with than they did a year ago.

AI is pushing general-purpose robots closer to real workplace autonomy
Fifteen years ago, the cutting edge of robotics research was getting a machine to walk across a room without falling over. Today, the conversation is about robots that can independently handle a sequence of complex, unpredictable tasks in real workplaces — and the gap between those two realities closed faster than almost anyone in the field expected.
For context on just how fast things have moved: in 1979, an experimental autonomous vehicle called the Stanford Cart needed five full hours to travel 20 meters through a room with obstacles. The first bipedal robot that could balance on its own did not arrive until 1996. For most of robotics history, the field was playing catch-up with problems that seemed almost embarrassingly basic compared to the sci-fi vision of a C-3PO or a Rosie from The Jetsons.
What changed the trajectory, according to researchers and executives at companies like Boston Dynamics, was the maturation of artificial intelligence — specifically reinforcement learning in the 2010s and the large foundation models that followed in the 2020s. These tools gave robots something they had never really had before: a way to understand tasks rather than just execute hardcoded instructions. Matt Malchano, Boston Dynamics' vice president of software, describes it as unlocking the ability to imagine a robot working through sequences of activities with genuine comprehension of what it is trying to accomplish.
That shift is drawing serious money. Billions of dollars in investment have flowed into robotics startups in recent years, with a significant chunk going toward humanoid robots specifically — machines designed to move through human-built environments using something approximating a human body. The humanoid bet is partly philosophical: if the world is built for people, a human-shaped robot needs less infrastructure to be useful in it.
But the race toward general-purpose autonomy is not exclusively a humanoid story. The more important distinction is between the robots that already exist in large numbers — industrial arms and warehouse bots designed to repeat one specific task in a controlled environment — and the next generation being built to handle variability. An assembly line robot knows exactly where a part will be every single time. A general-purpose robot needs to figure that out on its own, in conditions that change.
The International Standards Organization defines robotic autonomy as the ability to perform intended tasks based on current state and sensing, without human intervention. By that definition, most robots in use today are not particularly autonomous. They are fast, precise, and reliable, but only within narrow parameters someone else set up for them.
The version researchers are chasing now looks different — machines that can adapt, recover from surprises, and complete multi-step tasks without a human watching over their shoulder. Whether that arrives in warehouses, hospitals, or eventually homes is still an open question. But the underlying technology is no longer the bottleneck it once was, and that alone represents a meaningful inflection point for where this is all heading.
